lessons learned as a couple

Traveling with your partner can be one of the most rewarding (and sometimes challenging) experiences. When my husband and I first started traveling together, it was clear that our experiences were pretty different—he hadn’t traveled abroad much, while I already had a list of favorite places around the world. Naturally, I wanted to share those places with him.

Over the years, we’ve learned a lot about what works for us as a couple. Here’s how we’ve found our rhythm on the road and how my role as a travel planner has shaped our adventures:

1. Bringing Him Into My World

 • In the early days, I was excited to show him “my” places—the spots I already loved and knew like the back of my hand. From charming cobblestone streets in Europe to tucked-away cafés, I loved seeing his first reactions.

 • Sharing these familiar places also set us up for success: I knew the best neighborhoods to stay in, what to skip, and where to find those hidden gems.

2. Discovering New Destinations Together

 • While it’s great to revisit favorites, there’s something special about exploring a destination that’s brand new to both of us.

 • Our recent trip to Costa Rica was just that—a first for both of us. With no prior knowledge or “we’ve been there” experience to guide us, it felt like stepping into the unknown together.

 • And while Costa Rica was amazing, I walked away with a mental checklist of things I’d do differently next time. That’s the beauty of travel—learning as you go so the next trip is even better.

3. The Power of “We’ve Been There”

 • One thing my husband and I have mastered is leaning into the idea of “we’ve been there” as a tool for better planning. When I travel to a new place without him (as I often do for work), I approach it with the mindset of scouting it out for us as a couple or a family.

 • This means I can filter through the experiences—knowing what’s a 10/10 and what can be skipped. By the time we return together, I’ve done the heavy lifting to ensure our trip is flawless.

4. Looking Ahead: Building the Ultimate 10/10 Trips

 • Our approach has made us more intentional travelers. Even if one trip isn’t perfect, I see it as an opportunity to learn and refine the experience for the future.

 • With each destination I explore, I’m excited to eventually bring him back, knowing I’ve already mapped out the best spots and the smoothest way to enjoy them.

 Why It’s Worth It

Traveling as a couple isn’t just about the places you go—it’s about growing together through the experiences. Whether you’re revisiting old favorites or diving into something completely new, each trip adds another layer to your relationship and your shared memories.
