Maximizing Your Travel Points: Where to Use Them & Where to Splurge

Many of my clients come to me with travel points they've accumulated—whether from work trips, credit cards, or loyalty programs. They’ve put in the time, and now they’re ready to cash in for a well-earned vacation. If that’s you, here’s how to make those points work smarter for you!

Flights: The Best Place to Start

Let’s be real—no one gets excited about paying for flights. It’s not the “fun” part of travel; it’s just the necessary part. That’s why I always recommend using points here first.

And if you have the option to upgrade? Do it—especially for a red-eye or long-haul flight. Extra legroom or (if you’re really treating yourself) lie-flat seats can make all the difference in starting your trip on the right foot.

Hotels: Where to Use & When to Pay Out of Pocket

Most hotel points are tied to major brands like Marriott or Hilton, which is fantastic—if you’re staying in big cities or traveling within the U.S.

So, my rule of thumb? ✅ Use your hotel points in places with plenty of chain options—think NYC, London, or Berlin. ❌ Don’t expect to find a charming boutique hotel that takes points in a small European village or a remote coastal town.

That’s where I help my clients balance things—maybe you use your Marriott points for a few nights in London before heading to a cozy, family-run inn in the countryside. Best of both worlds!

Bottom Line: Use the Points & Take the PTO

If you can book your whole trip on points? Do it. A nearly free vacation? Yes, please. And if you’re mixing and matching, I can help you strategize where to save and where to splurge.

Most importantly—use every single PTO day this year. You earned it. Make it count. ✈️ 🌍
