Travel Planning Tips for Your Next Trip

As someone who spends a lot of time on Google Flights curating the best routes for my clients, I thought I'd share a few key tips that I prioritize during my research. Whether you’re planning an international adventure or a domestic getaway, these insights can help make your trip smoother and more enjoyable.

International Layovers
(Through Customs)

Plan for at least 2 hours when traveling internationally, especially if you need to go through customs. Lines can be long, and time can slip away quickly.

Pro Tip: If you have Global Entry, you’ll skip the customs lines when returning to the U.S. (but it won’t help when heading out).

Avoid CDG/LHR Layovers
(When Possible)

While it's not always avoidable, I recommend steering clear of Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Heathrow (LHR) for layovers. If you must pass through, make sure to allow a minimum of 3 hours to navigate these busy airports.

Flight Times Matter

Most transatlantic flights to Europe are overnight, departing in the evening and landing the next morning. But for domestic flights or non-overnight routes, I prefer earlier departures. The airport is quieter, and you’ll avoid delays with planes that have already arrived.

Hub Airports Offer Extra Support

Flying through a hub airport (think Delta in Atlanta, JetBlue in Boston)? It’s usually worth it. Hub airports tend to offer more flexibility and quicker rebooking options if your flight is delayed or canceled. Smaller airports don’t always have that same level of support.

Direct Flights Always Win

Direct flights save time and reduce stress. Yes, sometimes they’re with a budget airline, but it’s usually worth it. Skip the layovers, and avoid the risk of missing connections. If you’re not keen on the airline, consider upgrading to a better experience.

Skip Basic Economy

Basic Economy is never the way to go. You may save a little upfront, but you won’t have control over your seat, flexibility to change plans, or the ability to upgrade your experience. It’s simply not worth it for most travelers.

Happy Planning! I hope you find these tips helpful! Every airport is different, and you’ll hear various opinions on places like Atlanta or certain airlines. Personally, I focus on the best routes, timings, and layovers rather than being brand loyal.

PS: If you’re ever in Nashville, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport is amazing—great food, live music, and a fantastic vibe. Definitely worth a stopover! 🎶🍽️

Happy travels! 🌍✈️
